25 years ago, I wrote a song called Believe with Ivan Gough. Today, we’re releasing a 25th anniversary remix on Songspire Records. This was a special record for us. It was my first ever release, and the first time I’d heard my own music in a club and on the radio, played by DJs I respected.

There’s also a new breaks remix from the immensely talented Luke Chable. I’ve admired Luke’s work for years, but never had the opportunity to work with him. I love what he’s done with Believe.

And finally, here’s a short snippet of a demo from 25 years ago.

If you’re interested in some notes from the original recording, please read on.

Ivan, Sallie Harvey, Phil K, and Andy Page wrote Summer Breeze a couple of years prior to Believe. I loved the song and vocals, and I asked Sallie if she’d perform on something I was writing. Sallie and I recorded Believe’s vocals in Vicious Vinyl’s Frankston studio. I’d written some lyrics, and Sallie ad-libbed for around 40 minutes. The final song was pieced together from parts all over the DAT.

Believe’s main lead sound is a Nord Lead 2 rack, with an Eventide H3000 for the chorus effect (we’d borrowed the H3000 to finish the mix). We still have the original parts, but for the 25th anniversary remix I recreated the sound using eurorack modules, including a Doepfer Wasp filter. The Nord Lead 2 was used for a few sounds on the original. We also used a Kurzweil K2000, Roland JV-1080, and I think Ivan also had a Roland JD-990. It was mixed on Ivan’s Mackie 32•8 without much outboard gear.
